What are meltdowns, burnouts and shutdowns?

Meltdowns, burnouts and shutdowns are ways that your body is telling you they need time and space to recover from recent events such as overstimulation from lights, music, etc also from doing too much too quickly and overworking the 5 body senses (taste, touch, hear, see and smell).

Why is it important?

It is important to try and avoid meltdowns, burnouts and shutdown as this can have an effect on your mental health and wellbeing, also professional performance at work, etc. 

 

From my own experiences I know sometimes it can’t be helped or avoided due to work, education, shopping etc, but if you put things in place, it may help reduce the chance or occurrence of having a meltdown, burnout or shutdown.

 

If you experience a meltdown, burnout or shutdown there are ways that you can help yourself to recover. This is different for everyone, so try things and see if they help.

 

Here are a few ways to prevent and tips on help to recover from a meltdown, burnout or shutdown.

 

Avoid

  • Give yourself space
  • Priorities daily tasks
  • Block people on social media (this is a source of stress/conflict)
  • Have breaks away from social media
  • Reduce social interactions
  • Keep a diary (mood, activities, sleep
  • Ask for help
  • Seek online and in person support
  • Have a safe and calming place
  • Reduce noise levels
  • Talk to someone who has helped similar experiences
  • Practise self care
    • Listen to music
    • Sleep
    • Take meds
    • Watch favourite movies/shows
    • Reading
    • Take naps
    • Hike

    Blocking negative people does help to prevent burn out. I am glad that I often use that.

      Ya I do it a lot more then what I should have to. It removes the ‘forks’ in my life which helps me to keep my ‘spoons’ for important things.
