Neurodivergent Celebration Week 2023

Between 13 and 19 March 2023 is Neurodiversity Celebration Week.  This happens once a year, every year in March. This week is an important week to me as this helps people to understand the advantages about being neurodivergent. It helps neurodivergent people to learn more about themselves and see how neurodivergent is something to be proud of. This is a time for the neurodivergent community to come and stand together to help the world to understand our brains work different to the stereotype of “normal” and that we are individual people in an enormous and strong community.

Why I celebrate being me

Being neurodivergent is apart of who I am and I am very proud of that, also having a brain that works different to others can be an incredible thing. I think outside the box and see things in a different perspective. The older I get, the more I understand about myself and other neurodivergent people.

Dyslexic

I have always struggled with reading and found it hard to understand the information I was told/read.  Reading for a text book does not help my understanding of significant information. So when they used to show videos in lessons at school, it really helped the information to sink in better. I loved school trips as it was always victual learning.

This has continued into adulthood. I learn more by watching videos over and over again. I believe this is why I watch tv shows and movies more than a few times to help soak in key information. After watch tv shows/movies and even documents more than 10 times I will still spotting new information that helps to make sense to why/how things happen at that moment.

Autism

Finding out being autistic a few years ago has helped me to understand myself and my autistic friends better, also to know its acceptable to be different and unique.

Being autistic also has its disadvantages as it has made things harder for me to make new friends, try new things like food and traveling to new places that I haven’t been before.

What will you do to participate in this years Neurodiversity Celebration Week??

I love this post. I’m actually taking my toddler to an event for autism awareness and I honestly can’t wait! It’s great we are all talking more about this topic.

I’m glad you’ve embraced it instead of blocking it out. My nephew is autistic and there are certain foods he wont eat and his clothes cant be too tight and there are little things that scare him. He’s only 11 but he’s learning more about it as well so he’s not as scared anymore. As a result we are learning about it to further understand and help him out when he’s having a moment.
