Just watched “Can I tell you a secret?” on Netflix. It is about this male stalker on social media who turned out to be autistic.
He stalked multiple females on Instagram and other social media platforms, which are easy targets if you have public profiles. Once they turned him down or ignored him he became nasty, made fake profiles and targeted their friends and family. He started rumours, but somehow knew everything about them.
For me as an autistic person would get confused about what I have said to who and what about, but I guess he is used to it as he has been doing this for years.
At first I was worried if they were going to make his autism the excuse for his behaviour and use the old terms- high functioning, Asperger’s, person first language “person with”, but no, that was not the case.
They did have an autistic psychologist on there that talked about their worry that they would be “easy” on him coz he is autistic and that they would use the statement of autistic people having no empathy, but as one of the lass he stalked says on there. He used laughing emojis and found it funny at what he was doing, so yes he knew what he was doing and how he was affecting these people.
They go into depth about him not having any friends and that he was alone through school years. He turned to the internet to seek “friends”. He was later in life diagnosed autistic, way after leaving school.
Autism can explain certain behaviour but it isn’t an excuse for certain behaviour.
Thank god the judge didn’t see through the autistic diagnosis.
Maybe if he did have friends in school, he may not have been so hateful, but did he have no friends at school because he was nasty towards them as well?
