A few years ago I was diagnosed with GERD which is another term for acid reflux. I wake you in pain daily and have to be careful what I eat and what I do, even riding on rollercoasters has had an impacted on it.
I used to be very active walking everywhere but now because of the pain and needing to be careful of my food I have to plan things.
Since then I have been on many medications which only seen to help for a short time. Well I have decided to take another step and work on other ways that can help with this problem and then if that doesn’t help then I will take another further step and talk to a specialist and then explain what I have done already.
I have slightly changed my diet to limit what I eat as I know some things can upset my stomach. I have stopped eating citrus fruits and now only eat non citrus fruits like melons, pears, strawberries.
Thanks to an online friend I have known for many years now who has suggested that I use gripe water and something called Silicol gel. You use gripe water to help with trap wind and Silicol gel to line your stomach before eating a meal and so far both are helping me a little. Many of you parents would have heard of gripe water as it is marketed to help babies if they have colic but it always helps adults. With Silicol gel you have 15ml an hour before you eat or have a meal. It does make you burp a lot but that is a good sign it is working. It doesn’t taste nice and feels like very fine sand. I was given a tip to have a drink of water after. This did help me.
I have started to learn how to make smoothies as I know it’s not just about mixing fruit and veg together. You have to pick flavours that compliment each other. I used pear, cucumber, grape, melon and strawberries and all I got was cucumber and pear flavours, also the texture didn’t feel right. I may just have to eat them instead of blending. Changing your diet when you have GERD can make a big difference.
I have never been tested to see if I have any allergies but I have tried to remove or limit dairy and wheat from my food intake. I have had a food sensitivity test but it’s not the same as allergy tests.
Many medications can have side effects. I am lucky to not have any but it is always best to find alternative ways to help and to get medical help.
Since I was diagnosed with GERD and I have never had a review to see if it has got worse or better. GERD doesn’t go away. It can be reduced and managed.
