PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)

Information: 

A mental health condition that develops following a traumatic event characterised by intrusive thoughts about the incident, recurrent distress/anxiety, flashback and avoidance of similar situations.

 

Causes:

Post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder that develops following frightening, stressful, or distressing life events. 

 

Symptoms:

  • Flashbacks
  • Nightmares
  • Physical sensations, such as pain, sweating, feeling sick or trembling
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Chest Pain
  • Stomach aches
  • Avoidance

 

C-PTSD (complex post-traumatic stress disorder)

Information: 

A mental health condition that has similar symptoms as PTSD, but also includes having problems with managing your emotions and having relationships.

 

Causes: 

  • Childhood abuse
  • Domestic Violence
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Torture, sex Trafficking or slavery
  • War
  • Childhood neglect
  • Violence in the childhood home

 

Symptoms:

  • Lack of confidence- this may show as no longer feeling like a humans or not worthy of a healthy relationship
  • Feeling down
  • Lack of self esteem 
  • Distrust other people
  • Inadvertently seek out similar abusive relationships
  • Only seeks out relationships with protective caregiver figures.
  • Sense of self worth

 

Social Anxiety

Information:

Social anxiety disorder (also known as social phobia) is a persistent fear about social situations and being around people. It’s one of the most common anxiety disorders. Much more than just “shyness”, social anxiety disorder causes intense, overwhelming fear over everyday activities like shopping or speaking on the phone.

 

Causes:

may include genetics, environmental factors and experiences.

 

Symptoms:

  • Fearfulness
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Stammering
  • Rapid Speech
  • Shakiness of the hands and legs

 

Separation Anxiety

Information:

A normal stage of development for infants and toddlers. Young children often experience a period of separation anxiety, but most children outgrow separation anxiety by about 3 years of age. A condition in which a child becomes extremely anxious when separated from parents or even at imagined separation from parents. This type of anxiety less often occurs in teenagers and adults.

 

Causes:

Major distress and problems functioning in social situations or at work or school. Genetics may also play a role. 

 

Symptoms:

  • Anxiety
  • Apprehension
  • Fear
  • Crying
  • Fussing
  • Recurrent and excessive distress about anticipating or being away from home or loved ones
  • Reluctance or refusing to sleep away from home without a parent or other loved one nearby
  • Repeated nightmares about separation
  • Frequent complaints of headaches, stomach aches or other symptoms when separation from a parent or other loved one is anticipated
