- Physical or emotional harm to someone
What are the types of bullying (Red Flags)
There are many types of bullying which include:
- Verbal (e.g. name calling, taunting, threatening to cause harm)
- Emotional
- Sexual
- Online/Cyber (putting offensive or threatening comments or photos on social media, calling someone names)
- Indirect
- Social (e.g. spreading rumours, leaving someone out on purpose)
- Physical e.g. spitting, hitting, pulling hair, pinching someone else’s things)
Why would someone be bullied for
- Race
- Gender
- Disability (ableism)
- Gender reassignment
- Being different
- Liking different music
- Their name
- Their weigh
- What they look like
- Where they are from
They will find something they don’t like about you and use that against you.
Why would someone be a bully
Here are some reasons why someone may bully someone else for:
- Jealousy
- To feel better about themselves
- Anxiety
- Want to be seen as strong around friends (this could be from low self-esteem or seem as a weak member in the group)
- Have troubles at home
- Take attention off them
- In the need for control
- Feeling good about encouraging people to bully other people
- Think they are more important then other people
- Insecurity
- Lack of empathy
- Having challenging behaviour
- Having aggressive/ wrong role models (this will make them think that bullying behaviour is normal)
But none of these should be a reason to bully others.
Bully characteristics
- They invade your personal space
- They speak down to you
- They play the victim card
- Their tone of voice
- They need to be the centre of attention
- They point the blame to someone else
- They are two faced (they are nice around other people, but not to you)
- They don’t have many friends (this is because other people can see who they really are and dislike them)
- They make you feel small and not important
A lot of these characteristics are also narcissistic characteristics.
What can bullying lead to
- Suicide
- Burnouts
- Depression
- Anxiety
- cPTSD/PTSD
- Masking
- Stress
- Low confidence/ self-esteem
- No/low self respect
- Self doubt
- Isolation
- Anger
- Insecurities
- Paranoia
Signs of someone being bullied
- Change in behaviour
- Not sleeping properly
- Poor eating habit
- Becoming isolated
- Withdrawn
- Losing interest in their normal interests
- Missing/ disliking school
- Self harming
- Faking illnesses (e.g. headaches, stomach ache)
- Feeling low, depressed, anxious
- Being shy (when not usually shy)
- Don’t want to leave the house
- Avoiding work/ coworker/ boss
