I wanted to talk about how serious asthma can be.
There are different types of asthma, but they can all end in the same…. Death. If they are not treated or managed.
Why not to joke about asthma
People joke about asthma and wheezing, but the fact is not every asthmatic person will show common symptoms like wheezing as a symptom. Asthma can be a silent condition.
Asthma can affect every single person differently. Some can just take inhalers, some may need stronger medication. Some may be in and out of hospital. Some may just need a yearly review. This does not make any of them more or less asthmatic.
Be serious
As reports released by the charity Asthma UK in August 2019, shows that more than 1400 adults and children died from asthma attacks in 2018, but this was before covid and the effects of long covid. Long covid can increase the chance of asthma attacks and other lung conditions. It is reported that 1 in 5 will get a lung condition in their lifetime.

My Story
I was in my mid 20’s when I was diagnosed with asthma. My asthma has changed over the years. As I have got older I have to change my inhalers several times, add stronger antihistamines and add other medication to help with my type of asthma. But I have to have my inhalers and spacer with me at all times.
How does Asthma affect you

As an asthma sufferer myself I fully relate, winter is no fun at all. The cold gets on my chest and I have to take my reliever as soon as I’m outside. I need to take it. Even doing housework I have to take it and stop.

I had severe asthma for years. It’s been an uphill struggle between hospital and gp. Finally got referred to a difficult asthma clinic in 2020 and waited a year. I have been with them ever since I started on biologics in Jan and hoping to get approved long term.

I had my asthma review at my GP recently. The nurse was fabulous but decided although my asthma control is extremely poor she can’t do anything as I’m under severe asthma and on biologics. I was due to be seen in 3-4 weeks after my last appointment the first week of January and I’m still waiting to be seen!

I’ve just started on biological therapy and the consultant remarked that he was surprised I have not been referred sooner. My specialist nurse at my local has spoken about it on and off for years!! At £2000 per injection I understand why it takes a long time to get approved but I’m really pleased with the results so far. My most frightening experience was nearly dying from an attack. People who say “it’s only asthma” clearly have a lack of knowledge about how many lives are lost to asthma. This is way more than just a cough. I’m grateful for my asthma nurse at the hospital as she’s been so supportive. The team at Addenbrooks have been amazing too.

I’ve had chronic brittle asthma since 2015 and since then I have lost my house, my job and life. It has been the worst thing ever to happen to me. So far I have been extremely poorly in the ICU multiple times. I have a load of side effects. I’ve been attending a psychologist due to my health. I have had my fair share of negative and positive care

I have severe eosinophilic asthma and on my 3rd biological therapy. I’ve been really fortunate and have a fantastic consultant in the severe asthma clinic. My mum died from an asthma attack at age 56. I didn’t develop asthma until I was in my late 40s
